We’ve been nothing short of spoiled this year with the quality of games the NCAA has given us, and when you zoom in on our athletes, they didn’t disappoint either. We had two games with our athletes going head to head, and the run of upsets we’ve been seeing this season continued. Our athletes had a solid weekend finishing up with an 11-5 record and a combined 70 points!
Kelsey Huff had an awesome week for the Trojan, scoring 15 goals and 1 assist through her three-game week. The Trojans would leave the week 2-1 with a loss to Princeton, but two big conference wins over Colorado and Oregon. Kelsey also went on to win Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week! She’s out here doing big things and her opponents should be forward as we head into mid-season.
The ACC brought back their Thursday night matchups with Chris Gray and Matt Moore facing each other in a game that delivered the excitement everyone was anticipating. This was a fast paced game geared for the offenses. The Tar Heels were able to keep it close in the first half, but the Cavaliers would get some space and hang on for a 15-11 win over UNC. Matt had a day, putting up 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. Chris had a solid day, but wasn’t able to will the Heels to a win as he put up a goal and 3 assists. Matt and UVA are now 3-0 in the UNLTD matchups with victories over Syracuse, Johns Hopkins and UNC, all in consecutive games.
For our second UNLTD matchup, we had Connor DeSimone and Joey Epstein take on Brendan Curry and the Syracuse Orange this past Sunday afternoon. This was a highly anticipated game, as it was the first time Dave Pietramala would be returning to Homewood Field since he parted ways with Hopkins. Joey Epstein put on a show, scoring twice and collecting 3 assists, while Brendn Curry would score once in an effort to close the gap. Ultimately, the Blue Jays walked away with a 10-7 victory. Syracuse was keying on Connor the entire game, who came out with no points, but he grinded and did the work off the stat sheet to help get the Blue Jays get the win.
Belle Smith and Boston College came out with 2 dubs this week, against Denver and Yale. The Denver game was crazy, and the game was actually ended in the 3rd quarter because of freezing temperatures. Boston College went on to win 9-5 and, then went on to pump Yale in a 21-9 win to stay undefeated.
Kasey Choma had a great week registering 12 points through her two games this week – and racked up her 100th career point! The Irish went 1-1, with a win over Jacksonville and loss to Virginia Tech. They currently sit at 3-5, which isn’t the start they hoped for this season, but there is a lot of lacrosse to still be played this season. Katie DeSimone had a great week as well, getting 2 wins over Pitt and Penn, in which Katie would notch ten points on six goals and four assists.
Aurora and the Terps played Villanova this weekend, and walked away with a 19-7 victory other the Wildcats. Aurora scored 11 points in the game, on 6 goals and 5 shots. Aurora has been on fire lately and there might not be anyone who can stop her! Aurora was named the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week! We’re expecting big things from her for the rest of the season.
Lastly, we have the upset of the week. Joe Robertson and the Blue Devils took on Loyola. The game was moved from Saturday to Sunday because of the weather, but that didn’t faze the Greyhounds. Loyola played their game and had Duke on their heels coming out with a 12-10 victory. Duke’s defense looked a step slow early on, and just never seemed to get into their rhythm. Joe was held in check, only accounting for one goal in the contest.
Our ladies had more games throughout the week and ended up winning the week with significantly more points. But the guys still showed out, so don’t overlook their performances. The girls went 8-2 with 40 goals and 15 assists, while the guys had a record of 3-3 on 8 goals and 7 assists.
We’ve got a lot of lacrosse to watch this week, so let’s get into when everyone is playing this weekend.
