Ask LU: Common Lacrosse Gear Questions—Answered!

Every week at Lacrosse Unlimited, we hear the same questions from players, parents, and coaches. From stick setup to stringing myths, these are the things players want to know—but don’t always know who to ask. So we’re answering them here.

“How often should I restring my lacrosse stick?”

Short answer: More often than you think.

If you’re playing regularly, your pocket should be checked every 4-6 months, or sooner if:

  • Your release feels inconsistent

  • The mesh is bagged out

  • You’re losing control in traffic

Weather, use, and mesh type all affect durability. A fresh restring can instantly bring your stick back to life. Pro-tip; bring your stick with you every time you visit a Lacrosse Unlimited location. Let our professionals give your stick a full evaluation and let you know what needs to be tweaked for optimal performance.

“Does mesh type really matter?”

Absolutely.

Mesh affects:

  • Ball feel

  • Release speed

  • Consistency in different weather

Soft mesh gives great feel but can bag faster. Semi-hard mesh lasts longer but may feel rigid. Semi-soft blends both worlds and is what many players choose today.

There’s no best mesh, only what fits your game. Some of the top selling mesh now a days includes the new Throne FPX mesh; rigid at first but quickly adapts to the speed and pace of your game. If you want to add some color pop, check ECD’s Hero 4 Striker patterns or Throne’s new APX runner design

“Is my stick too heavy?”

If your hands feel slow or your shots feel late, weight could be the issue.

Modern sticks are designed to be lighter without sacrificing strength. Many players don’t realize how much energy they’re wasting using older shafts or heavier heads; especially at attack and midfield.

Sometimes dropping just 20–30 grams changes everything. We find the perfect weight for goal scorers and feeders is in that 145 gram range most high end metal shafts come in. If you are more of a between the lines player that grinds out games, the 165 range of carbon/metal handles will be just right for you!

“How do I know if my head is worn out?”

If your head:

  • Feels overly flexible

  • Warps after play

  • Throws inconsistently

…it’s probably past its prime. Plastic softens over time, especially with heavy use and weather exposure.

If your stick feels “off” and nothing else explains it, the head is often the culprit. Come talk to one of our store managers, they have the knowledge and tools to make sure your head is always game ready!

Got a question about your stick? Bring it in. Our team checks setups every day and helps players dial in gear that actually works for them—not just what’s popular.
