Cinderella Stories to Watch In the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship

As the 2025 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship unfolds, the spotlight often shines on big teams like Syracuse, Maryland, and North Carolina. However, we’re here to talk about the overlooked power house teams that have fought their way to make it to where they are now. Programs such as Fairfield, UAlbany, Mercer, and Liberty have defied expectations and have rightfully earned their spots in the tournament, ready to set the stage for potential upsets. Let’s look into it.

Liberty Flames: A First-Time NCAA Appearance

The Liberty Flames have made history by clinching their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. After securing the ASUN Championship title, they are entering the competition with nothing but determination and momentum. This significant milestone for the program is a testament to their growth and resilience as they are nowhere near ready to give it up anytime soon.

UAlbany Great Danes: Veterans with Upset Potential

After defeating Bryant, the number 1 seed, in the conference, UAlbany has secured an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes have a history of postseason success as they had a memorable upset over Virginia in 2023. This is Albany’s fourth American East Tournament title win that they are pushing to take to the end.

Mercer Bears: Rising Contenders

The Bears have had a standout season as this is their fourth consecutive Big South Tournament win. After securing their seventh bid into the NCAA Tournament, Mercer will be going up against The Florida Gators on Friday, May 9. With a combination of skilled upperclassman and a promising underclassman, the Bears have the potential to surprise those higher-seeded teams.

Fairfield Stags: MAAC Champions

After defeating Iona University in the MAAC Championship, the Stags will be entering their ninth trip to the NCAA Championship in program history. Fairfield’s consistent performance and experience in high-pressure games make them a formidable opponent in the NCAA Tournament. This Friday, the Stags will be meeting Maryland for the first time in hopes to advance to the quarterfinals.

What to Expect

These underdog teams bring a unique blend of skill and determination to the tournament. While they may not have the same national recognition as some of the top seeds, they are definitely not teams that should be looked over due to their recent performances and capabilities. Fans can expect thrilling matchups and the possibility of new Cinderella stories emerging in this year’s NCAA WOmen’s Lacrosse Championship.
