Playoff Season Check Up’s!

As the regular season winds down, playoff lacrosse and summer tournaments are right around the corner. That means it’s time to make sure your gear is ready before the games start to matter even more. The last thing any player wants is equipment issues during a playoff run or halfway through a packed summer tournament weekend. Before you hit the field, take some time to check the three most important parts of your setup: your stick, cleats, and gloves.

Check Your Stick Before It Checks You

Your stick is the most important piece of equipment you own, and after a full season, it may not be performing the way it did on day one. Start by taking a close look at your head. Are there any small cracks forming around the scoop or sidewall? Has the head become warped from weather, faceoffs, or heavy use? Even if it still feels usable, a worn-out head can impact your accuracy, release, and consistency.

Next, look at your pocket. If your mesh has become bagged out, inconsistent, or overly soft, it may be time for a restring. A fresh pocket can completely change how your stick performs heading into the biggest games of the year. Make sure your shooters are still properly tensioned, your sidewalls are tight, and your channel is still defined. If your stick has started throwing differently over the last few weeks, that’s usually a sign your pocket needs attention.

Your shaft is just as important. Check for dents, soft spots, or cracks, especially near the throat and bottom hand area. A damaged shaft might survive practice, but playoff intensity and summer heat can expose weaknesses quickly.

Don’t Ignore Your Cleats

Your cleats take a beating all season long. Between turf, grass, rain, and constant travel, it’s easy for them to wear down without you realizing it. Before playoffs begin, check the bottoms of your cleats to make sure the studs still have grip and aren’t worn flat. Traction becomes even more important during summer tournaments where fields can change from game to game.

Also pay attention to the upper material and ankle support. If the sides are separating, the toe box is breaking down, or the cushioning feels dead, it may be time for a new pair. Fresh cleats can improve comfort, confidence, and explosiveness, especially during long tournament weekends with multiple games per day

Make Sure Your Gloves Are Still Game Ready

Gloves are one of the most overlooked pieces of gear when preparing for postseason play. Over time, palms wear out, padding breaks down, and liners start to tear. Take a few minutes to inspect your gloves before the season’s biggest games.

Check the palms for holes or thinning material that could impact grip. Make sure the padding on the backhand and fingers is still intact and protective. If your gloves have become stiff, overly loose, or ripped in key areas, they may be hurting your performance more than helping it.

A solid pair of gloves should still provide protection while allowing full mobility and feel on your stick. If they’ve lost that balance, it may be time for an upgrade.

Be Ready Before the Games Matter Most

Playoff lacrosse and the summer circuit are some of the best parts of the year. The competition gets better, the intensity rises, and every detail matters. Taking the time now to inspect and refresh your gear can make a huge difference once the games begin.
