Your New Stick Just Landed — Here's How to Not Mess It Up

Congrats on the new stick. Whether it's your first or your fifth, that fresh-strung pocket feels different from everything else in your bag right now — tight, a little stiff, not quite yours yet. That's normal. Here's how to treat it the first few weeks so it breaks in right and lasts you the season.

Give it a minute before you judge it

A brand new pocket is going to feel stiff and a little unpredictable at first, and that's not a flaw — it just hasn't been played with yet. Don't panic and start yanking on strings after one bad catch. Throw with it, cradle with it, let it take some shots off the wall. Mesh and leather both soften and settle with use, and most of what feels "off" in week one sorts itself out by week two.

Actually break it in

The fastest way to get a pocket game-ready is to use it like you mean it. Wall ball, catch and release, cradling on the run — repetition is what softens the mesh and lets the pocket find its shape. If you've got a little time before your first game or practice, put in a few sessions early. A stick that's been broken in properly holds its pocket way better under real game pressure than one you're breaking in during a live rep.

Keep it out of bad weather when you can

Leave a strung head sitting in a hot car or a damp garage for a few weeks and you'll shorten its life fast. Heat can warp the head and stretch mesh unevenly, and constant moisture breaks down leather ties and shooting strings faster than normal wear ever would. It doesn't need to live in a climate-controlled room — just don't make things harder on it than they need to be.

Small adjustments are normal, not a red flag

As the pocket breaks in, don't be surprised if the shooting strings need a tweak or the pocket depth shifts slightly from where it started. That's not a bad stringing job — that's mesh doing what mesh does. A slightly loosened shooter or a small pocket adjustment two or three weeks in is completely normal maintenance, not a sign anything went wrong.

Come see us if something feels off

If your pocket ever feels inconsistent, the strings are fraying, or you just want a check-in to make sure everything's dialed in right, stop by your local Lacrosse Unlimited. We strung it, we know what it's supposed to feel like, and a quick five-minute adjustment in store is a lot easier than fighting it during a game. No appointment needed — just bring the stick in.
