Your helmet does more than just complete your look– it is the most important piece of your protective gear. Whether you’re stepping on the field for game day or just grinding it out in practice, keeping your helmet in shape is crucial for both your safety and performance.
In this post, we’re breaking down the necessities of helmet care so you can not only stay protected, but extend your gear’s life while looking fresh.

Clean Your Helmet Regularly
Turf pellets, dirt, and sweat build up quickly. A clean helmet doesn’t just look better. It performs better too.
- Use a soft cloth with mild soap to wipe it down after games and practices
- Stay away from abrasive pads and harsh chemicals as they can break down the plastic or damage the finish
- Dry it out completely before storing it away to prevent those funky smells and mildew

Check the Fit
The feel of your helmet should be snug, but not painfully tight. Over time, the padding of your helmet can shift or compress.
- Every few weeks, check the fit
- If your helmet wobbles when you move your head, it’s too loose
- Keep adjusting the inside pads and chin straps until you get that secure feel

Inspect for Damage
Lacrosse is a high contact sport. Hits are inevitable. Dents, loose screws, and cracks are clear signs that your helmet needs some TLC.
- Look closely for any cracks in the shell
- Confirm that your face mask is firmly attached and not bent out of shape
- Check your straps, buckles, and clips for any wear or breakage
- If you feel or see that something’s off, don’t take the risk. Talk to your coach or gear manager about fixing it or breakout the backup.
