At Lacrosse Unlimited, we believe in the power of sports to bring communities together and provide opportunities for young athletes to thrive. This belief was the driving force behind our recent donation of $15,500 worth of lacrosse equipment to Brentwood High School on Long Island. With the help of USA Lacrosse and the Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation, we were able to make a meaningful impact on a program that was in need of support.
Supporting a Legacy and a Community in Need
Brentwood High School has a strong lacrosse tradition, including being the alma mater of National Lacrosse Hall of Famer Frank Urso. However, in recent years, both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs have struggled with outdated equipment and limited resources. The girls’ program, in particular, faced significant challenges in securing basic gear such as sticks, goggles, and gloves.
When one of our employees, who is friends with the Brentwood coach, brought this situation to our attention, we knew we had to act. Lacrosse should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial barriers. Together with USA Lacrosse and the Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation, we ensured that the Brentwood varsity and JV girls’ teams—and even four middle school teams—were fully equipped and ready to play.
A Special Delivery and a Big Surprise
On Monday, the Brentwood athletics director, coaching staff, varsity and JV players, and school superintendent gathered to receive the special delivery. The excitement was palpable.
“Their faces were all lit up,” said Rob Rimmer, Vice President of Brand and Creative Director at Lacrosse Unlimited. “Everyone was very grateful.”
The donation created a ripple effect of enthusiasm throughout the Brentwood lacrosse community. According to Francisco R. Herrera, the coordinator of athletics for the Brentwood Union Free School District, the impact of the new equipment went far beyond just the material aspect.
“Your generosity is bigger than you can ever imagine,” Herrera said. “Your commitment to our girls has given every girl a sense of belonging and the notion that there are people in the world that care about them.”
A Renewed Spirit and Immediate Results
The excitement generated by the new equipment was contagious. Herrera shared that the buzz around the donation had even reached the middle school teams, where players were thrilled to learn they would also be receiving new sticks. The varsity team, perhaps fueled by their renewed spirit, coincidentally won their next game after the donation.
“The enthusiasm of the new equipment had everything to do with that win,” Herrera added. “Our program is in such a better place.”
Harry Jacobs, regional director at USA Lacrosse, highlighted the teamwork that made the donation possible.
“We all made a difference in the life of each and every one of the Brentwood girls lacrosse players,” Jacobs said. “There were lots of people involved in doing something really good for kids. It was a great day for lacrosse.”
